Root
Embroidery and Acrylic on Canvas
35 × 50 cm, 2023
“Root” arises from a desire to reinterpret the Anatolian texture embodied by Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s characters through mixed techniques. The familiarity of these figures carries a reality we sense beyond our personal experience—like stories transmitted across generations through embroidery and weaving, holding the indelible traces and melancholy of this culture.
The characters, rendered in black-and-white embroidery, sit quietly inside a colorful carpet motif; patterns seeping into faces recall layered notions of identity and belonging. This contrast makes visible the tension between the weight of tradition and the individual’s struggle to find a voice; the carpet border acts both as stage and cultural ground.
The pauses, unfinished sentences, and long silences of Ceylan’s cinema resonate within this mute crowd. Each stitch cuts through time like a held frame, turning the image into a surface where personal narrative and collective memory meet.
