Tebdil'i Mekan
Scenic and Costume Design / Realization
Apartman Sahne, 2024
This play was written on the road.
Along the paths of fairy tales, literature, poetry, culture, marketplaces, conversations, neighborhoods, shops, taverns, coffeehouses, the streets and parks of Istanbul; along the roads of womanhood, manhood, adolescence, childhood, youth, old age, deprivation, longing, pride, joy.
It stopped at many stations. At some, it lingered; at others, it paused only briefly:
It threw itself into the fire in “Ağır Roman”,
Had a drink of water in “Kara Kitap”,
Caught its breath in “Başkalarının Tanrısı”, kissed the hands of “Yangın Yerinde Orkideler”.
It received blessings. It continued on its way. It visited poets and offered its greetings.
With a plaintive eastern fairy-tale melody in its ear… It hummed. A pianist-chantant guided it along the journey.
“Welcome,” it said at every stop.
It resembled a magical chaos we can only encounter at amusement parks — impossible to take our eyes off.
It went a little, went a long way, crossed hills and valleys.
It arrived home.
Home was where you returned. It did not return in vain.
Sıla Erkan’s second and final play of the “situation–space–time” trilogy, Tebdil-i Mekan, is on stage.
Four people living in a tavern are joined by a young person who, angry at their father, runs away from home after their stepmother.
This group of five walks, wanders, drifts, escapes through the streets and parks of Istanbul for one night; trying to reach that home.
“There is a house in the distance.”
